Acousto-Optic Tunable Filters: Technology and ApplicationsGooch & Housego /Opto Science, Inc. Acousto-Optic Tunable Filters (AOTFs) are used in a variety of markets including, life sciences, spectroscopy, and homeland security. The AOTF allows the user to electronically select and transmit a single wavelength, a selection of multiple discrete wavelengths, or a tailored wavelength band from the incoming light. The spectral selection is caused by the interaction between light waves and acousto-optic waves within a crystal, the acousto-optic wave being generated through the use of a piezo-electric transducer bonded to the crystal surface. The spectral selection is extremely fast, randomly accessible and involves the use of no moving parts. The diversity of applications demands a wide range of AOTFs covering the spectral range from UV through NIR. From lamp illumination to laser line selection, each AOTF is specifically tailored for optimum performance and large diameter devices have been developed for high resolution spectral imaging applications. G&H have developed AOTF components for a variety of applications including space based remote sensing, confocal microscopy, fast throughput biomedical screening, mineral identification, plastics recycling as well as art conservation and stewardship. |
